This Cuban-influenced restaurant bar is taking up one massive stable block in Camden Market and can accommodate from 20- 350 guests. The bar decor idea makes use of its converted warehouse setting, twinned exposed brickwork and dark wood flooring against art pieces and neon signs lights hanging on the wall. Moving from the first floor, you are led into the dining room by an industrial staircase before being greeted by high-level dining booths and retro furniture. For drinks, they deliver cocktails and a carefully curated wine list.

London Edition’s premiere restaurant is under the direction of executive chef Jason Atherton and hosts 140 guests, serving guests breakfast, lunch, and dinner. tub chairs in the front of the space create a café-like setting, while banquettes in chestnut mohair and taupe leather and round, rift cut bleached oak tables define the central dining area. Two large custom bronze chandeliers inspired by NYC’s grand central station scale down the original 5.5 meter (18-foot) ceilings to make the space more intimate, paired with custom leather upholstered modern bar chairs are the real deal! Yabu Pushelberg was in charge of  Berners Tavern bar design and decoration.

As there were several consultants working on the project the challenge was to consolidate all these experts and their ideas. It was essential for the design and atmosphere to appear to the guest as one entity and for there be a homogenous approach to all elements of the design from the artwork and graphics, to the interiors and the drinks.

These challenges were overcome through constant communication between all parties ensuring the design process reflected consistently and clearly both the concept of each of the disciplines involved.

Despite its location at the tip of a skyscraper, almost all of the hotel’s public areas have double-volume ceiling heights—maximizing views and providing the luxury of space.

One of the many design highlights of the hotel is Bar 81, an upscale champagne bar paired with a panoramic sky view.  Wilson Associates enveloped the double-volume-height bar in white stone caged in satin brass compartments, a play on the traditional cellars found in Europe. Inspired by the song “Champagne Supernova” by the band Oasis, the team worked with renowned glass lighting makers, Lasvit, to create a sea of hand-blown crystal bubbles suspended over the entire bar.

The drama has always been part of the designer’s storytelling, mastering spaces that have a chance of creating a soul. Patrons to the bar will be able to enjoy Champagne under a sea of ethereal fizzy bubbles.

Westlight, New York, USA

Westlight is the 22nd-floor rooftop bar from Chef Andrew Carmellini’s NoHo Hospitality Group featuring sweeping views of New York City from atop The William Vale hotel in fashionable Williamsburg. Studio Munge’s modernized industrial design connects international travelers and urbanites alike through glowing interiors that complement the spectacular open vistas overlooking Manhattan.

Inspired by Williamsburg’s eclectic diversity Westlight has cultivated an intimate and uncontrived community of free-tinkers. Making the guest feel instantly at ease, the black iron, natural stones, warm leathers and sensual velvets cohabitate here in perfect harmony. Westlight is a bold yet graceful design statement that challenges stereotypes and successfully represents a new generation of thinking.

Prohibition at Rosewood Hotel Georgia, Vancouver, Canada

Located within the legendary Rosewood Hotel Georgia in downtown Vancouver, Prohibition is an intimate and seductive cocktail lounge experience. The lounge area design epitomizes sleekness and sophistication with a sultry bar color scheme of blacks and greys accented by onyx highlights and textured rich jewel tone fabrics. The main bar catches the eye of cocktail enthusiasts from every angle as featuring an elegant black stone top with reflective silver accents adorned by jade table lamps. Prohibition stimulates a heightened sense of seductive opulence.

Bar Cluny, Toronto, Canada

Located in Toronto’s historic Distillery District, within the heritage site of the Gooderham Building, Cluny embodies the quintessential French bistro experience in a warm and welcoming environment. With a creative and modern design approach, Studio Munge transformed one of the Distillery’s old “Tank Houses” into an engaging visual feast while paying homage to past traditions.

Working alongside Heritage Toronto, the design team complemented the historical nature of the Gooderham Building by applying authentic materials accented by the contemporary finishes that give Cluny its modern feel while preserving its character. Through the application of a striking FF&E program, custom graphics and identity package, as well as bespoke artwork and accessories, Studio Munge actively contributed to the modernization of the Distillery District while honoring its unique history.

Alibi Ultra lounge at Aria Resort Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

At the heart of Las Vegas’s Aria Resort Casino, Alibi is one of the most luxurious 24-hour gaming lounges. Alibi becomes one of the many immersive entertainment destinations from nightlife maverick, the Hakkasan Group. Launched in November 2014, Vogue Lounge, Bangkok is housed in the top floor of the Mahanakhon cube, a luxury retail and lifestyle centre in the heart of thailand’s capital. The cube is part of the iconic Mahanakhon development. Designed by David Collins Studio and created in collaboration with Condé nast and Pace Development, the lounge comprises a restaurant, bar and terrace at 515 square metres with 120 covers.

Taking inspiration from iconic black and white photographs from the Vogue archives the concept reflects the timeless luxury and glamour of the Vogue brand. Vogue Lounge’s beautiful bar interior design reaches an A rating due to the cosmopolitan lounge area seating, like the golden brass stools with backs upholstered in leather!

Artesian at Langham Hotel London (UK)

Created for Langham Hotels & Resorts and opened in 2008, the award-winning Artesian bar lounge takes its eclectic inspiration from the Victorian cabinets of curiosities featuring hidden textures, details and references including jewelled mirror jewelled panelling, blue and purple crocodile tiles mixed with leather bar stools, bespoke lacquers referencing la chasse aux papillons, and a pagoda bar.

Three oversized hand-crafted chandeliers add to narrative exploring the empire and the far east within the scheme.  Artesian has won the title of the “world’s best bar” in 2012, 2013 and 2014, as well as the “most influential european bar” in the cocktail & spirit awards.

The Century bar, Gleneagles hotel, Perthshire (UK)

Located in Perthshire, the Century bar, one of Scotland’s most iconic bars and the main bar at Gleneagles, is 290 square metres and was created for client ennismore in June 2016. The design team was tasked with creating an elegant and contemporary space that would enhance the guest experience, whilst celebrating Gleneagles’ heritage and scottish identity. Restored original panelling, art deco-style lighting and a brighter colour palette better reflect the history of the hotel, while window spaces have been opened up to maximise the views of the ochil hills and provide a connection between the interior and exterior of the property.

An atmosphere of warmth and understated elegance has been created through traditional textiles and upholstered bar stools, including accent fabrics, accessories made by scottish ceramicists and custom stained glass screens created by dunblane-based firm ramoyle glass.

The Gilbert Scott Bar, Saint Pancras Renaissance, London (UK)

The Gilbert Scott is one of london’s lost treasures, emerged after years of hiding following David Collins studio’s subtle intervention. The design was developed in collaboration with english heritage and is is inspired by historic railway stations. Opened in may 2011 and created for Marriot hotels, the Gilbertscott bar has 40 covers and is managed by marcus wareing.

Brew Brothers at Presque Isle Downs & Casino, Erie, Pennsylvania, USA

After the success of Brew Brothers at Scioto Downs Casino in Columbus, OH, sister property Presque Isle Downs & Casino enlisted SOSH Architects to recreate the modern microbrewery at their Erie, PA racino. To support the innovative Brew Brothers brand, the design team created a vibrant bar and restaurant space that puts the inner workings of the brewery process right on display. Bottle caps are used to create mosaic wall art, and a uniquely designed keg wall are focal points of the authentic industrial design. Rustic materials like reclaimed wood, metal and concrete blend with warm colors and elegant design elements to give the décor an upscale yet comfortable feel. The design includes a 42-foot-long bar and 192 seats, ideal for enjoying meals, music and microbrews.

Tropicana 10 North Lounge, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA

Tropicana chose SOSH Architects to create a warm and contemporary bar directly off the new North Casino floor. The space came with several design challenges, including low ceiling heights and numerous support columns for the hotel structure above. Using innovation to overcome these obstacles, SOSH delivered a bar design that is intimate and inviting. Back-to-back fireplaces create a special ambiance in two living room lounges. Gleaming Emperador dark marble and 24 video slot machines span the 100-foot centerpiece bar. Behind the bar is a backlit glass wall set aglow with natural minerals, crystals and semi-precious stones. With a chic and elegant nod to modern day Cuba, 10 North Bar & Lounge offers design surprises that are as intoxicating as the spirits served within.

Robert’s Steakhouse, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA

Robert’s Steakhouse utilizes the warm, comfortable elements found in a traditional steakhouse, but puts them together in a sophisticated and contemporary way. The nearly 8,000 square foot space boasts a variety of rich wood elements, along with luxurious banquette seating, and custom lighting throughout. Upon entry into the 850 square foot bar and lounge area, the main feature is a 3 sided glass enclosed fireplace. Glendale’s got its groove back, with a new mellow bar perched right along its western edge that’s ideal for a casual evening out. Together they’ve created an inviting new place for cocktails and bar food including burgers and sandwiches, with bartender Bryan Byrnes running the show. The overall bar decoration was well designed where the leather bar stools are a must-piece.

*Lounge Ever Bar Los Angeles

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants continues its bullish expansion throughout southern California with its third opening, this time located on the cusp of the Hollywood Hills. Ever Bar has an eclectic collection of mid-century modern furniture barstools along with zinc counter and a communal white Carrera marble bar.

*Checker Hall

Checker Hall is overseen by chef Hovig Agop, a longtime nightlife vet who hails from places like Las Perlas, and owned and operated by the same independent hospitality team that runs the adjacent Lodge Room. Whereas the Lodge Room music side is a big, open wood-floored venue, Checker Hall is a more intimate and enclosed kind of dining experience. The place is pushed up on the second floor overlooking Figueroa, and offers a balcony for checking out the street crowd below. Inside, an angular bar anchors the room while booths and long banquette seating ring the edges.

*Oriel Chinatown

Dustin Lancaster, who’s done stylish places like Bar Covell and Augustine to more laid back Eastside hangouts Crawford’s, Hi-Hat, and Hermosillo, has opened a cool new wine bar in Chinatown called Oriel. Oriel’s smooth wine bar vibes is very well mixed with Chinatown culture, and the contemporary bar stools are a most for this marble balcony type!

*Prank Bar

The man behind the Prank project is none other than Dave Whitton, an LA favorite from Villain’s Tavern who spent time in San Diego opening bars with Aiden Demarest.  The cozy bar seating situation surrounded by lots of glass, still be a great way to enjoy the outdoors environment.

Bangkok Vogue Bar by David Collins Studio

Launched in November 2014, Bangkok Vogue lounge is housed in the top floor of the Mahanakhon cube, a luxury retail and lifestyle centre in the heart of Thailand’s capital. The cube is part of the iconic Mahanakhon development.  Designed by David Collins studio and created in collaboration with Conde Nast and Pacedevelopment, the lounge comprises a restaurant with contemporary bar stools, bar and terrace at 515 square metres with 120 covers.  Taking inspiration from iconic black and white photographs from the vogue archives the concept reflects the timeless luxury and glamour of the vogue brand.

Autoban designed a new restaurant and bar in Istanbul, located in the city’s stylish Nisantasi district. Nopa’s design features sharp geometric lines, rich natural woods and marbles with brass accents as well as bespoke lighting, furniture and contemporary bar stools. All of the lighting and contract furniture has been custom-designed for the space.

Navy blue looks exceptionally stunning on framed walls. Also, many points for the use of green marble against the dark blue wall, which takes the interior design to the next level…and once again the contemporary bar stools are Kelly Wearstler inspirations!

Balthazar Champagne Bar

Designed by Peter Bundgaard Rützou and Signe Bindslev Henriksen, Balthazar Champagne Bar is a lunch/evening bar situated in Copenhagen, Denmark. This restaurant bar decor has been realized as part of a complete renovation of the iconic and leading classic luxury hotel, Hotel D’Angleterre. Occupying one of the most attractive locations in the city, Balthazar addresses both the Copenhagen locals, as well as accommodating guests from the hotel. Dusk bar at The Ritz Carlton Naples, Florida, USA

Blueplate Studios, a Wilson Associates specialty food & beverage design studio, completely refurbished the dining venues at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples. From the classic steakhouse to the bar, each venue captures a different element of upscale resort living. The color palette for each space was inspired by the sunrise, sunset and infinite view of The Gulf of Mexico.

Le Lapin, Macao, China

Le Lapin is a modern, quirky French eatery that sits atop I.M. Pei’s Macao Science Center. Influenced by the owner’s Chinese zodiac and the restaurant’s circular shape, it artfully tells the story of the rabbit and the moon. Wilson Associates New York approached the project from a holistic perspective, conceptualizing everything from the brand identity to the artwork, carpet and 16-meter-tall wine wall. Valued at more than $2 million, this wine collection is spread over three levels of catwalks. Inspired by the moon’s phases, the design scheme by Wilson Assoc. includes dramatic LED stars throughout the walkway that recall the night sky.

Bread Street Kitchen, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

Bread Street Kitchen at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands brings Chef Gordon Ramsay’s signature British European cuisine to Singapore. Like its sister properties in London and Hong Kong, Bread Street Kitchen is an intimate, atmosphere-driven dining experience that is part industrial warehouse chic, part bustling city brasserie.

Designed by Wilson Associates’ Blueplate Studios-Singapore, the two-story restaurant and bar stays true to the brand’s East London industrial roots, re-inventing certain brand elements to create an authentically Singaporean eatery.

Adrift by David Meyers, Singapore

Channeling the wanderlust spirit of gypsy award-winning chef and restaurateur David Myers, Adrift in the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort, is a bespoke urban enclave inspired by the places, faces and flavors of California and Asia. With a nostalgic spirit and modern aesthetic, Adrift is an “eclectic chic” epicurean environment unlike anything Singapore has seen before.

The 4,000 sq ft restaurant features a mix of spaces that cater to varied dining experiences, from artisanal mixology and delectable snacks at the bar, to a convivial feast of shared plates within the restaurant, and intimate dinners with friends or business partners at the private dining room enclosure.

Choose the right height

Chair, bar stool or counter height? To determine which stool you need, measure the height of your table or counter. Keep in mind you need 9″-13″ between the seat and the counter for seating comfort.

• Chair stool heights are generally 18″ from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 28″-30″ in height;
• Kitchen counter stool heights are generally 24″-26″ inches from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 36″-39″ in height;
• Bar stools heights are generally 28″-30″ from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 40″-42″ in height.

Determine how many stools you can fit

It’s important to provide enough space between stools for people to eat, drink and socialize without bumping elbows. Here are the rules of thumb we use:

• If the widest part of your stool is 16″-18″ allow 21″-22″ of space per stool.
• If the widest part of your stool is 19″- 22″ allow 24″ to 25″ of space per stool.
• If you choose stools that swivel and/or have arms, you’ll need to add a bit more space between stools.

Consider the style of stool

Do you want to make a design statement or do you want more discreet seating? Do you want to match or layer materials in your kitchen? And do the stools you really want work in the space you have? Your answers can help you determine the style of stool that will ultimately work in your kitchen.

If your stools are in a busy or narrow corridor or you don’t want a look that overwhelms your island, choose backless seating that can easily tuck away. But if you love to entertain and want something more lounge-worthy, choose a broad-backed stool with deep seating.

Whether the style of your kitchen is traditional, rustic or contemporary, you can find a stool that complements your look. There’s no need to be too matchy-matchy. If, for example, your dining room is adjacent to your kitchen, it’s not necessary to match the style of seating. And if you already have a lot of wood, try mixing it up with metal stools. Keep an open mind, and you’ll find just the right look for your kitchen.
